nullstars prototype
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
nullstars will be a difficult precision platformer, with a heavy emphasis on providing a highly expressive control system that lets you move fast, and levels lovingly and painstakingly hand crafted to provide a puzzle in figuring out how to complete them within their time limits.
this game isn't that. just yet, anyways. this is a prototype of the basic idea. originally, I was going to keep working on this codebase, but eventually I realized that nothing short of a rewrite would get me the game I envision. at the very least, this nightmare I threw together has just enough to be a nice novelty, or maybe even be fun, so I decided to post this while I work on what I hope to be the final game.
there is a decent chance either nothing at all works, or it works flawlessly. I have some notes for your consideration:
- use arrow keys to move, Z and C to jump, X to dash, and shift to grab. press ctrl to open menus (which you can do around checkpoints). you can reset to your checkpoint by holding down ctrl. place down a temporary checkpoint by double clicking ctrl.
- several rooms are missing. ignore awkward holes and hallways with nothing.
- there is a chance the game will randomly crash when a room unloads and then immediately reloads.
- every setting except for the sound and graphics settings aren't implemented.
- some backgrounds are broken on Linux.
- it isn't a bug when a room pops in when you approach it - it means you were moving really fast :)
- there might be a chance the timer stop block keeps its collisions, even when its timer is still going? I'm honestly not sure, but there's really nothing you can do about it other than restarting the game.
- hopefully that's it
have fun.
